Who remembers the white sales of the past? The classic white sale was a staple of department stores from the early days of the 1930’s forward. While department stores are slowly fading away, in our opinion, the white sale shouldn’t. After all, white sales remind us of simpler times and the true spirit of Americana. And at Thomas Lee Sheets, we aren’t the kind of people to turn our noses to that kind of sentiment.
History of White Sales and Cotton Sheets
John Wanamaker, a marketing pioneer and the 35th U.S. Postmaster General, is known for opening the first department store in Philadelphia, conveniently called Wanamaker’s. He is also the person who, in 1878, created the first white sale.
Wanamaker was trying to think of ways to encourage people to come in and shop during the slower, winter months. Very few people wanted to venture out of their homes during a Philadelphian winter and I can’t say I blame them! However, Wanamaker offered his bedding and cotton sheets at heavily discounted prices and coined the discount as the “White Sale.” The reason he called it a white sale is because in the 1800’s, and the first half of the 1900’s, cotton sheets and bedding were only offered in white. Well, his idea worked and white sales became staples in the department store legacy.
I’m sure growing up, you can remember white sale advertisements from Macy’s and J.C. Penney’s. Or maybe you can recall a time where your grandmother or mother bundled you up, shuffled you out to the car in the freezing cold and drove to Macy’s to shop for cotton sheets and bedding during the white sale in the department store itself.
At Thomas Lee Sheets, we are passionate about paying homage to a time where life moved at a slower pace, people greeted each other as they walked by and summers spent at grandma’s were the highlight of the year. This is why we choose to continue to have white sales. Embracing tradition and being a classic American brand is what excites us and is the reason we only design and produce the best. Attainable luxury for your home can be found at Thomas Lee Sheets.
